Hello I was hoping to get some additional information on crossing the border into Canada from the United States. Unfortunately I have an driving under the influence charge on my record from July of 2013, and nothing since, my dilemma is that I am looking to travel into ontario in August of 2018 for a fishing trip. I have looked at the proper procedure I need to take but would like to clear up some questions. Would I be eligible for a one time free TRP given at the border crossing? Do I still need to fill a rehibilation application out? If so do I apply before hand or in the month of July when my sentence is five years old? Will the application be proceeded in time if done in July? Any info. On this topic would be of great help

Hi Alex, In order to qualify for the one-time TRP, your sentence must have been completed within the last 5 years, you did not serve any jail time, and there must be nothing else on your record. If you meet all of these, then you are eligible for the one-time TRP that is issued at the border. Unfortunately, there is no way to obtain a TRP ahead of time. You can only apply for the granted rehabilitation once 5 years has passed from end of sentence. When you wish to come back to Ontario you will need to complete the granted rehabilitation application. Keep in mind that it can take up to 2 years for your application to be processed. You can find the link to the rehabilitation application here: www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/application/application-forms-guides/application-rehabilitation-inadmissible-persons-criminal-activity.html

Thanks for your quick reply Laurie! Yes as of July of 2018 it would be five years, so with all the other requirements (No jail time,no other crimes since) would it be beneficial to me to still fill out the rehibilation application before trying to enter Canada? I guess what I'm getting at is since the TRP are issued at the border does it help my odds to have the application in the system? Also is there any paper work I would need to fill out prior to me crossing? In the end the TRP is essentially given at the discretion of the immigration officer correct? Thanks again for the help !

Hi Alex: It would be a smart idea to start the granted rehabilitation process before you go. I am not sure how long it will take to get a file number though and until you have that, they won't be able to see that you have submitted it through the system. You should give it a go though. You're definitely going to want to come back to Ontario after this trip in any case. There really isn't anything to complete before seeking your TRP at the border crossing but If you do make application for rehabilitation, having a copy of your application with you and any acknowledgement of receipt when you cross is a good idea. Yes, TRP is as you said at the discretion of the immigration officer at the border.

Hello there,
I have been invited to fish in Ontario this summer and I'm excited to do so but I am concerned about a DUI I received 20 years ago. It was a bad decision on my part for sure and one regret that I will always have. There was no accident, no injury, just me being stupid! ( all fines paid, school classes etc. ) Is this a worry for me?
Thank-You.
